A Glimpse Into Forever   1 comment

The first creature was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.”
And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
“Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

Revelation 4:7-11

What do we worship?

Some of us worship celebrities and celebrity gossip and spend our days on Perez Hilton and reading tabloids to hear about the latest celebrity break-up.

Some of us worship sports and athletes and games, giving our lives up to play a sport and to follow a team and to know everything about our team.

Some of us worship success and prestige, living our lives without a moment of rest because we just need to make one more sale, or write one more paper, or design one more thing, so that we can stand out from among the hoi polloi.

Some of us worship leisure, doing nothing all day and loving it.

Some of us worship our families, being satisfied only so long as my wife is beautiful and my children are perfect.

Those things, in an of itself, aren’t too bad. Being interested in celebrities and sports can be fun; working hard and having success can be a good aspiration; finding time to rest is necessary; and family is important. BUT, these are all secondary. In heaven, the scene will consist of none of these things because everyone will be focused on shouting out “holy, holy, holy” and “worthy are You.” It’s not that God is a kill-joy who won’t let us enjoy other things. It’s that God Himself is the culmination of all our enjoyment, and when we are before Him, everything else pales in comparison.

Eat ground beef when I can have Kobe beef? Drive a beat-up, barely running car when I can cruise in a new Beamer? Sit in the bleachers, when I have a pair of tickets on the 50-yd line? Focus on anything else when God–God Himself–is before my eyes? In the words of Ralph Wiggum, from the Simpsons: “That’s unpossible.”

  1. Amen brother. I was just wrapping my mind on what our guest pastor just preached on the topic of “true worship” from Psalm 73 last Sunday and how that intersects my living! Thanks for that much needed reminder 🙂
