Freedom From Self-Preservation   Leave a comment

I just had to steal this from Ray Ortlund’s blog: http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/rayortlund/2009/11/19/freedom-from-self-preservation/

The whole point of it all is that Christians should not care about self-preservation, either physically or socially, but should rather live for the “true grace of God” (1 Peter 5:12)–the privilege of sharing in Christ’s sufferings that we may also rejoice when His glory is revealed.

1 Peter 4:12-16 (NASB):

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you are sharing the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name.

Matthew 6:19-21, 24:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also…

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth [or self-preservation].
