Soul-Piercing Words from Kevin DeYoung   3 comments

“We have this fascination with the will of God that betrays our lack of trust in God’s provision. We want His Word that He’ll tell us what to do rather than His Word that He will be with us no matter what we do. We need to trust that He holds the future, not that He will show us the future. That’s why God does not normally give us these special messages about what to do—because that short-circuits the sanctification process.  You wouldn’t have to get holy. You wouldn’t have to be transformed by the renewing of your mind and the power of the Word of God. He can just tell you. ‘Don’t touch that… Stop. Go there. Wrong major—cancel that class—drop it. Dump her.’ Then you wouldn’t have to be holy. You wouldn’t have to get wisdom. You wouldn’t have to trust.” — Kevin DeYoung, at the NEXT Conference 2009
